Kansas City, MO, December 2 — During the recent Global Entrepreneurship Week in Kansas City, Julie Cortés, the founder of The Freelance Exchange (www.kcfreelanceexchange.com), shared that by 2027 50% of the workforce in the US will be part of the gig economy and engaged in full-time or part-time contract work. What started with Fractional CFOs and CIOs just a few decades ago, extended to advertising and marketing, driving and delivering, and now covers every segment of the economy. As of recent, Kansas City is also home to one of the few companies engaged in providing interim or fractional CSOs and SVPs of Sales.

The gig economy is only a few decades old and supersedes a time when every employees’ and employers’ goal was permanent, full-time employment. The term refers to a workforce environment in which short-term engagements, temporary contracts, and independent contracting is commonplace. It is also referred to as the freelancer economy, agile workforce, sharing economy, or independent workforce. And it is growing since 50% of the workforce in 2027 is double what it was just ten years ago.

At the executive level, the fractional Chief Financial Officer is the most commonly known function. In fact, the first fractional executive company in the US was founded in 1987 for CFOs. The reasons for a fractional executive, especially in a small or medium-sized business, are clear: They are highly qualified, have successfully managed challenges like the ones the business faces today, and they can be available within a few days. Unlike consultants, they not only identify the steps necessary, but they take charge and lead the change. And lastly, they are available for the exact duration they are needed, on a fractional or interim basis.

All the same reasons apply for a Chief Sales Officer or SVP of Sales. The technology start-ups in Silicon Valley led the way for the fractional or interim Sales Leader. And in a time when almost every product needs active, experienced salesmanship to sell, organizations need their head of sales to be a true leader.

Kansas City is home to one of the few companies in the United States to provide Sales Leaders on an interim or fractional basis. Co-Founder and Partner Henning Schwinum is clear: “I have a strong conviction about what constitutes true sales leadership. And I have seen my share of really bad sales executives. It is time that every company has access to excellence.”
